ProCanes at the Miami Dolphins’ Inaugural Training Camp

In 1966, there were 23 former Hurricane Football Players in Training Camp with the other 33 AFL, NFL and CFL Teams, while the Dolphins alone would have 11 ex-Canes participating in their Camp over the course of that summer – meaning almost 1/3 of all of the 34 proCanes in the major Pro Football Leagues’ Camps that summer were trying to make the Dolphins Roster

On July 5, 1966, 83 (mostly rookies) out of 109 prospective players under contract with the AFL’s only Expansion Team showed up at the original Miami Dolphins training camp held on St. Petersburg Beach. The first cut came just days later on July 9, 1966, before most of the free agent veterans had even showed up, as the original group of 83 had to be cut to 49 that day to make room for those incoming Expansion Draft Picks and other select free-agent veteran pros.

On Aug. 23rd, rosters were reduced by 6 to 42 players; on Aug 30th, the final 2 cuts brought rosters to 40 for the start of the Regular Season.
QB/P Eddie Wilson and DB Ross O’Hanley were both placed on the season-ending IR list, but the AFL’s Injured Reserve Deferred List was probably limited to only 2 or 3 players at a time and also presumably limited to 16 days (but possibly 30 days or 4 games instead). Rookie WR Howard Twilley was coming off an injury incurred in a College All-Star Game and only appeared in 6 games in 1966 and most likely started the season on the Deferred IR List. In a similar manner, either Rookie WR John Roderick, LB Jack Thornton or OL Jim Higgins could have joined Twilley on the Deferred IR on opening day given that they also appeared in only 6 or 7 games during the ’66 Season. Wes Matthews, Johnny Holmes, Stan Mitchell, Hal Wantland, Billy Hunter or Draft Pick Bob Petrella all played in 4 games or less (after presumably being recalled) and were among these likely last cuts (unless others – including veterans – were placed on the Deferred IR for opening day). The following change has been confirmed for this timeframe: TE Bill Cronin was added to the roster and “Rabbit” Brown was removed (but probably added to Miami’s PS, although AFL PS’s were undoubtedly limited [possibly 5 players?] like with the Deferred IR) –
