^Died of ALS on Sept. 3, 2000 at age 48, and believed to be
the 1st proCane to have died of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (UM’s
Jim Dooley was later reported to have died of ALS in 2008).
From JAMA Dec. 15, 2021: Based on a Study covering 19,423 NFL
athletes who debuted between 1960 & 2019 and played at least
1 professional game, these athletes had nearly 4 times higher
incidence and mortality rates of ALS compared with the US male
population, adjusting for age and race. Presumably, Frohbose &
Dooley are 2 of the 38 diagnosed with ALS in the study and 2 of
28 post-1960 NFL players who died of ALS before 2019.

drafted in 1971 by Cincinnati Reds, 1st Rd., 6th overall
